The date was selected, because it is the birthday of a timeless teacher and the former President of India - Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. When some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, he said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege, if September 5th is observed as Teacher's day". From then onwards, the 5th of September has been observed as Teachers Day, in India.

Teachers Day is celebrated with great plum and joy across the world. Its a day when students meets and gifts their beloved teacher for their contribution in ones life. Various cultural and social programmes are organised in schools, colleges and other places. Even teachers are honoured and given tribute for their special contribution towards the society and to acknowledge their contribution towards students. In most colleges and schools, senior students dress up as teachers and take lectures of their juniors. Apart from the fun aspect of the day it is also a day when one can look back, admire and get inspired by Dr. Radhakrishnan, a small town cunning boy, who grew up to become one of the most respected politicians in the history of democracy of India.
